Warwick Adventure Playground presents ‘Play in the Community’; funded by Yorkshire Art Circus and the European Regional Development Fund.
The film shows an insight into the importance of play in the lives of children and young people within an Adventure Playground.
The play area has been open for over 25 years and has grown and developed. It is a safe place for children to go where parents don’t have to worry. Many children come here as other play areas have been damaged and vandalised. Many children come every day, except Sunday, when it is closed.
Children have the right to have somewhere to play where they can meet their friends and where they can grow up in a safe environment and they can express themselves.
The children say they have lots of fun and see their mates and if the Adventure Playground wasn’t there, the friends would all be dotted around Knottingley and would not meet up so much.
The children say the workers such as Ann, Debbie, Chris and June are kind. One worker has worked at the Playground for over 24 years and she says it means everything to the community and that all children need a place like this to burn off their energy. The children can play pool or table tennis, play outside on the playground or in the sandpit and there are always activities such as Arts and Crafts organised.
One child says it is nice and peaceful and you can just ‘get on with things’.Some Saturdays the children make dens under supervision. They use hammers and nails and decorate the dens. They also plant trees and gain an understanding and respect for nature. They are also encouraged to respect fire and under supervision bake over the fire.
The children enjoy skating in the park and the older children tend to look after the younger ones, encouraging respect for each other. They all collect insects and get the water slide out for lots of fun!
The children learn to mix with each other and play together and also the Playground is a great resource for working families during school holidays. One play worker says this place gives the children freedom in a safe and dynamic environment, which hopefully will have long term benefits in reducing anti social behaviour in the future by building good relationships with each other now.
